Summer is NOT Over – 10 Ideas for Savoring the Remainder of the Season

By: Martianne Stanger

July has passed and September is just around the corner.  Don’t let that fool you into thinking summer is over.  Back-to-school sales may beckoning from flyers, emails and store windows, but the truth is that summer still has weeks to go.  In fact, it doesn’t end until the Autumn Equinox on the 23rd!

So dig out your Summer Bucket List (remember the one you might have created after reading Make a Summer Bucket List: Bringing Summer Fun Within Reach in June) and block off some time to enjoy the reminder of the season – even if only on weekends and evenings.

I know my family and I intend to do that.  In fact, we recently realized we’ve made it more than halfway through our own Summer Bucket List without even trying.  (A lot of the things on our list just happened naturally, it seems, without us even consulting the list again.)  Now, we’re looking forward to ticking off a few more items in the coming weeks.

Summer is not over!  There’s still so much left to enjoy.

Here are ten free (or inexpensive) ideas for continuing to savor the season:

  1. Go fruit picking.
  2. Watch free Outdoor Movies at the Pine Hills in Plymouth.
  3. Stroll along the Providence Water Fires.
  4. Enjoy a Project Arts concerts.
  5. Hang out at the Wading Pool.
  6. Have a picnic on the beach and burn it off at the playground after enjoying the Plymouth Farmer’s Market.  Or enjoy one of the other Farmer’s Markets that Kristen mentioned back in June.
  7. Get hooked on running, like Kris – and get your kids hooked, too.
  8. Relax on the town hall lawn in Middleboro while taking in a concert.
  9. Follow Robin’s lead and do backyard scavenger hunts.
  10. Curl up with a good book and enjoy the tale end of one of the summer reading programs Jessica told us about.

Whatever you do, don’t throw in your beach towel yet.  The weeks ahead may feel like fall with back-to-school sales and, perhaps, even some crisper air coming in.  However, there is still plenty of time to relish a jaunt to the beach, through your backyard or out at community events.

What will you be doing to savor summer?  Do share!

  1. I recently won Lake Compounce tickets, so we were there this weekend, we’ll hit Water Wizz as tradition dictates, then try and squeeze in a trip to the Vineyard (we are lucky enough to have family that works on one of the ferry companies, so we go for free.) It all ends with our wedding on the 26th. and a quick “family-moon” in NH. I still can’t believe this summer went so fast!

  2. Winslow Farm in Norton offers Movies Under the Stars every Friday and Saturday night. Winslow Farm is an animal sanctuary with a variety of animals and is open to the public. Check the website http://www.winslowfarm.com for movie listing or call them but admission is $5.00 and movies start around 8 pm with soda and popcorn available for purchase. Family friendly event that is a lot of fun!

    Great post!

  3. We went to a new place today, Purgatory Chasm State Park in Sutton, MA. It has picnic tables, a small visitor center with restrooms, and a playground. The trails are well marked, but it’s probably a trip for slightly older kids as there is a lot of scrambling around and over rocks and you will probably need to used your hands some. I went with a Cub Scout troop and the kids loved it! It’s shaded which is nice and several trails ranging from 1/4 mile to 1 mile with different ways to connect between. I plan on taking the family back again in the fall. It only took us about 45 min from our house in Norton.
