Who Is CVWU? Meet Cape Verdean Women United

By: Tina Cardoso, Executive Director at Cape Verdean Women United, Inc.

Cape Verdean Women United is a non-profit 501c(3) organization based in Brockton. Our mission is to unite, educate, and empower families of all cultures with the aim of creating thriving communities.

At Cape Verdean Women United (CVWU), we are steadfast in our approach of providing culturally appropriate health and wellness awareness, violence prevention education, and resources to build healthier communities.

Every week our program organizes:

  • Multilingual support groups for women to connect, build strong relationships, and identify local services.
  • Emergency financial assistance and job training to individuals and families in need.
  • Healthy Relationship sessions for high school students to equip them with skills to develop safe, positive connections.
  • Raising a City of Champions (RaCC) education – a family-based intervention program designed to target the harmful effects of exposure to family and community violence on urban youth and their parents.

Our signature RaCC (Raising a City of Champions) program, is an 8-week culturally appropriate violence prevention program adapted from the SURVIVE COMMUNITY PROJECT. This program has been delivered in Brockton to hundreds of participants for the last five years in various settings, schools, summer camps, churches, and adult learning centers.

Our Healthy Relationships program in partnership with the Old Colony YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club of Metro South is a culturally sensitive program working with a diverse group of youth from the Brockton community to elevate teens and educate them on what constitutes healthy & unhealthy dating practices, causes/consequences of dating abuse, and help to equip fellow teenagers with the skills and resources they need to develop safe, healthy relationships of their own.

Our newest Community Support Program offers care coordination, educational forums, support groups, cash assistance, and job training assistance to individuals and families in need.

We also extend our mission to help underserved communities overseas!!

CVWU has been successfully implementing our programming, with the help of our partners, donors, and sponsors, since embarking on this journey on July 8, 2016!
