Do these changes affect MENTAL HEALTH?

The term “autumn anxiety” was coined by Welsh therapist, Gillian Scully. After noticing a trend in anticipation, overwhelm, and stress in clients at the end of summer and beginning of fall, she named the condition Autumn Anxiety. The main symptoms of Autumn anxiety are feelings of anxiety and anticipation.
Why are there mental health changes with the onset of fall/winter?
As most of us know there is a decrease in sunlight, which can cause Seasonal Affective Disorder. Serotonin (a brain chemical that affects mood) levels drop. Fall brings many changes, including shorter days and colder weather, which can contribute to isolation and loneliness. Upcoming holidays and family issues can also lead to an increase in mood changes. What happened to enjoying the change of seasons without being overwhelmed with the stress of knowing the holidays are around the corner?
There are techniques to try to help combat these feelings. Remember there is always hope and the ability to take positive action!
- Get outside, take a walk

- Good sleep helps to regulate many areas that affect everyday living.

Fall is a time of change. It’s also a reminder that our mental health needs to be nurtured.
