Yard Sales … On Facebook?

By: Jessica DiRamio

You may have figured it out already, but did you know that I am a huge fan of all things social media?  My job requires me to be on Facebook and Twitter for several hours a day and during that time I have found some interesting things happening.  I recently came across several groups on Facebook where local moms are posting their items for sale.  “Virtual yard sales and consignment shops” is what I like to call them.  Several times a day, moms from the south shore post pictures of their items for sale and even post about items they’d like to buy and are in search of.

I’ve seen anything from last season’s ice skates to a motor boat posted for sale in these groups.  It is fun to browse the pictures and it also helps me to determine the right pricing for my items.  I have yet to post anything, but have so many items I could easily part with; I am contemplating having this project be one of the first I tackle once the kids are back in school.

The cool part about the local consignment groups is the ease of handling the transaction.  I’ve seen many people pick a spot convenient to both parties to meet up.  I do hope that no one meets are their own homes, because that is really not safe.  South shore resident or not, one can never be too safe.  I also hope that everyone is using cash to pay for the items purchased through people on these groups.

I highly recommend finding these groups on Facebook if you are interested in saving some money and/or making some cash on your gently used items.  I’m curious, have any of you consigned online?

  1. I didn’t hear about the facebook yard sale until my sister-in-law emailed me, saying she signed me up or added me to the group. I’m still catching up to the modern era of technology, but I think it’s interesting and a interesting way to sell items. Cheaper than using ebay too.

  2. That is a great idea. I’m definitely going to look and see if they have one in my area. I know a number of people, myself included, that have tried selling things on FB!

  3. I will have to try these out. We are trying to purge, but I never got around to doing a regular yard sale this summer.

  4. How do you get started having a virtual yard sale??? My friend and I are very interested. Can anyone help us?
