Seven Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

By Kylie Spiro, Communications Coordinator, BAMSI

The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970. An estimated 20 million people nationwide took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to raise awareness about environmental issues. By 1990, Earth Day was being celebrated in more than 140 countries worldwide.

With the climate crisis worsening each year, Earth Day serves as an annual event to reflect on how you can limit your environmental impact. Each year, the movement continues to inspire, ignite passion, and motivate people to take action.

This year, the theme for Earth Day 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics,” with a focus on the crisis of plastic pollution and how to advocate for a reduction in plastic production. Not sure how to strengthen your relationship with nature or better support the Earth for future generations? Keep reading to learn how to make a difference this Earth Day.

Earth Day Ideas to Help Save the Planet Any Time of Year

  1. Use green transportation. Opt for a “green” mode of transportation. Walking or biking are the best ways to reduce your carbon emissions on your commute. If your commute is longer than a couple of miles, look into carpooling options instead.
  2. Go paperless. Reduce your carbon footprint by going paperless: Digitize your documents, opt for e-bills and statements, buy e-books, and use online baking or electronic payments.
  3. Use the dishwasher. Did you know that handwashing uses more water and energy than a dishwasher? Even if you only have a few dishes to wash, a dishwasher is the green way to clean them.
  4. Use less plastic. Of course, using less plastic is easier for some than others. However, making simples changes like carrying a reusable water bottle, using a reusable shopping bag, and saying “no” to plastic straws are little changes that make a big impact.
  5. Turn off the lights. Do you really need those lights on while the sun is out? Try conserving electrical energy by only using the electricity that you absolutely need.
  6. Offer your time. Volunteer to collect trash and waste from local parks, roadsides, rivers, and more!
  7. Plant a garden. Whether you own an acre or a balcony, you can plant fruits and vegetables from seeds to grow your own nutritious foods. Just remember to only plant seeds that will adapt well in your climate.
