A Time to Celebrate Contributions and Legacies: Older Americans Month!

By Nicole Long, CEO of Old Colony Elder Services

Even though May has come to an end, we at OCES would like to extend the celebration into June! May was Older Americans Month, which recognizes and celebrates older adults’ contributions to our society. Have you heard? Massachusetts has more residents aged 60 or older than residents aged 20 or younger.

Studies indicate that longevity is based on two major factors, genetics, and lifestyle choices. Older adults typically remain physically active and socially engaged. There are many ways that they do this.  Some attend health, wellness, and social activities at their local senior center.  Others act as mentors or volunteers for their church or other organizations.

Older adults not only provide support to others; they inspire others. Learning new things, being creative, and engaging in new activities not only builds knowledge and experience, seniors also inspire many individuals of all ages. Our seniors are incredible resources of information and experiences and are an essential link to our past and to history overall.

It is to our benefit that older adults are so often willing to impart their stories of difficulties and successes along with the important lessons they have learned over the years. By sharing their life-changing experiences, knowledge, and day-to-day stories, they provide the wisdom and connection that helps to better prepare us for the future.

Join OCES in recognizing and celebrating the valuable contributions of older adults and the vital role they have in all our lives.

If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, OCES provides many opportunities through the Plymouth County’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).  Please call Cidalia America, Volunteer Coordinator at OCES for more information at (508) 584-1561.
