A Letter To My Daughter

By: Jessica DiRamio

Dear Daughter,

I know that when you hear me speak you sometimes want to ignore me. I know that some of my advice doesn’t mean anything to you now. I know you think that all I do is talk, talk, talk.  I do this because I only have a short time to teach you about the world before you are in charge.  Eighteen years might not be enough.

Here is what I’ve been saying and will continue to say to you:

  • Be nice to your sisters.  Someday you will need them on your side.
  • Remember that we really do love you and remember to reciprocate that love.  We won’t be around forever and although you may not think so now, you will regret not showing your love for us as much as you possibly could.
  • It’s OK to cry.  My shoulders are strong enough to hold you up, no matter how big or tall you grow.
  • Take care of yourself. Don’t text and drive, don’t do drugs, don’t smoke, drink responsibly, and eat an apple a day.
  • Don’t talk badly about people.
  • Life is so much easier when you are nice to others, even when they aren’t so nice in return.
  • Always give 100%.  You don’t need to be the smartest or the best.  Just give it all you’ve got.
  • Be empathetic.
  • Admit when you are wrong.  No one is perfect and everyone can learn from mistakes.
  • Surround yourself with people who love you, care for you, and want to see you succeed.
  • Steer clear from people who enjoy your failures and like to point out your flaws.
  • Tell the truth.  Always.
  • Say “please,” “thank you,” “I love you,” and most importantly, “I’m sorry,” as much as possible.
  • Fight for what’s right.  Be a do-er.  Don’t sit by and let bad things happen just because they are difficult to fix.
  • It’s OK to show emotion.  Laugh loud, cry for hours, jump for joy, and growl with anger.  Don’t hold it in.

These are just fifteen of the hundreds of tidbits of advice you will receive from me, Dad, and others.  Read these over and over.  Life isn’t easy but these values will make it a little more manageable.

Love, your biggest fan

Mom
