Exercising During Pregnancy

By: Keith Merlin, MD, Chief, Department of OBGYN

pregnant-1561750_1920.jpgRegular exercise is important for overall health and wellbeing. It also helps keep your weight down and lowers risks for high blood pressure and diabetes. I encourage all women to engage in regular exercise for at least thirty minutes, three to four times weekly.

There are certain modifications that pregnant women need to be aware of. For those who are expecting, we like to keep your pulse rate around 120. Also limit activities on your back after the first trimester. Be sure to hydrate before, during, and after a workout. Also, if something starts to hurt stop or modify the activity. If you are just  beginning to exercise or resuming a routine after having a baby, remember to start slowly and carefully.

If ever you have questions, please speak with your provider for guidance and advice. Be well!
